Cinema4D - Prototyping

In this workshop we were shown how to create prototypes to demonstrate things such as designs for packaging and labels. We first did cans and then looked at doing a glass bottle both created using an illustrator file for the outline, however for the bottle cap we were shown how to create something like this from scratch straight in to Cinema4D which was useful as it helped me to understand how the software works. Finally we created a box which we also made from scratch and we were shown the best way to add graphics to each side of the box. I found this workshop really useful but it was also a lot to learn.

After Effects - Infographics

In today's workshop we had to collect data about ourselves and create a short 10 second animation displaying this information visually. The two main aspects we looked at were creating two different scenes to work with, one to do with a map and one to do with a bar chart. I chose to use a map of the UK displaying my journey from my hometown of Milton Keynes to Uni, and for the bar chart i chose to do how much i sleep as it was supposed to be something that represents us and sleeping is something very important to me.

Before the workshop i looked in to different infographic designers as i've never done anything like this before so i wanted to find some inspiration and some ideas for what information about myself i should include. I found the designer Jonathan Shackleton, i like the idea of using a dark grey, white and then a bright colour as it looks simple but you can use the bright colour to highlight any important aspects.

We were also shown a couple of examples during the workshop to give us some inspiration and also to demonstrate what sort of techniques we'd be learning how to do. This one was my favourite as it was kept quite simple but effective and i liked the use of the circle as a symbol throughout the whole clip to transition through each bit of data, i thought this tied it all together nicely and made it flow.

Here is what i created during the workshop; my favourite part was the map section.  After the workshop i reflected on what i had done and decided that my design was a bit dark and maybe adding some more colour may look better and also playing around with the start and also my transition clip could improve it slightly.

Self-Publishing; Type Stencils - Abstract Typography

In this workshop we were given different fonts; Baskerville Bold Italic, Din Alternate and Cooper Std. I deconstructed sections of the fonts to create stencils which i then used to create abstract prints.
In the first poster i did, i looked at Baskerville Bold Italic. I took the first section of the W in the font and the stem of the Y and drew them blown up in to a stencil which i then used to create a random pattern for my print. In the second poster, i looked at Din alternate. I drew out half an X and the curved section of the P to create this print.

Hyperrealities

Explore and Research:
  • Hyperrealities
 'a condition in which what is real and what is fiction are seamlessly blended together so that there is no clear distinction between where one ends and the other begins'

Jean Baudrillard's theory
examples; Black Mirror, Misfits?, Disneyland
  • The Meme
'an idea, behaviour or style that spreads from person to person within a culture'

examples; internet memes -photos with captions or videos
Kilroy was here -American popular culture expression (graffiti WW2)
  • Millenials
people born from 1980 - 2000
worldwide we are more similar to each other than previous generations because of western culture and social media impact
examples;
generation maybe'we want to be there and not miss anything anywhere'
generation serious grown up in a time where we are familiar with terrorism, e.g. 9/11
generation snowflakemore prone to taking offence and less resilient than previous generations, too emotionally vulnerable to cope with views that challenge their own
education? bad parenting?

mental health is as important as physical health
-Bipolar Disorder; people who suffer with this disorder choose the "face" that others will see enabling them to hide their emotions and cover up.
-Split; Dissociative Identity Disorder/Multiple Personality Disorder

Mood board 1; Hyperrealities
- things aren't always as they seem e.g. Black Mirror & similar programmes, Disneyland, dreams

Mood board 2; Mental Health
-split personality disorders, hidden emotions, e.g. Split (film),

After Effects - Cameras, Z-Space and 3D

For this session we had to prepare some work in Illustrator to use in the workshop, we had to create a background scene using 10-12 layers with only one colour in each. My group's theme was The Universe so i created a Space scene. We could have parts of it going outside of the art board so that when we animate it using a camera in After Effects it would have a better effect.

We used this Illustrator file in our workshop to create a short 10 second animation clip, taking inspiration from the following clip;

MGMT - All We Ever Wanted Was Everything from oneedo on Vimeo.

We used the same style of work as was used in the All We Ever Wanted music video, for example using textures over the top of our colours, using the peel effect to make it look like different elements were being stuck on to the page and also the use of the camera to tell the story. I enjoyed the workshop but i felt that the way i set up my Illustrator document made my final animation look weird in places, for example i did shading on the planets on a different layer which meant when they flipped up they went at a different rate to the planet it was supposed to be shading.

Self-Publishing; The Stencil

This workshop was inspired by the protests and demonstrations in May 68 in France. The civil unrest in the country at the time spurred on an artistic movement of political graphic art with hundreds of silkscreen poster prints being created in order to protest.
'weapons in the service of the struggle'
In our Workshop we chose at random an image and some text from the stone roses song 'Bye Bye Badman' which we then drew and cut out using a craft knife and made in to a stencil. We used different coloured paints and a roller to create different poster designs using our stencils to make quick signs which can be replicated easily.

I chose to use a stencil of a fist and the lyrics 'choke me', i played around with different colour combinations to create random designs which was fun to do and then later on experimented using black paper and white paint, using the bit i cut out of the stencil to create a cool effect which i thought turned out quite well.

Cinema4D

During this workshop we were shown how to use Cinema4D as a tool for graphic design. This really appealed to me as i think you can make some really interesting designs in 3D so i was keen to lean how to use the software.
We were shown examples of this in practice such as Channel 4's recent rebrand;

First we had to create a simple logo in Illustrator which we transferred in to Cinema4d as this makes it easier to work with. We added colour and text and experimented with different effects.

After rendering this copy we added more effects and added the luminance effect to the colours to make it more vibrant.

After this we were shown briefly how to animate this by using the camera view and rotating on the axis;

Think! Research

'conceptualise, design and deliver a road safety campaign to encourage young men to drive more safely'

think.direct.gov.uk
@thinkgovuk
  • 1,700 road deaths and 22,000 injuries in 2015
  • 17-24 year old drivers are four times more likely to be killed or seriously injured
  • high levels of risk are to do with inexperience, age and common behaviours e.g.. driving with friends and night time driving
  • there is evidence to suggest the frontal lobe (part of the brain that assesses risks) is not fully developed until our mid-20's
  • young male drivers are far more likely to be involved in crashes than young women
target audience: males aged 17-24
focus: 'the roadside swab identifies drug drivers on the spot'
objectives: to increase the belief that you're likely to be caught and convicted if you drug drive and also to increase awareness of the roadside swab

I have decided to focus my campaign on drug driving as i feel it is less talked about than drink driving and many people are unaware of the dangers and consequences drug driving can have. Most people have heard of a breathalyser and are aware of its uses but few know about roadside swabs which are used for testing drug drivers.

To inform my research i have created an online survey for males aged 17-24 to fill out. My aim is to gain an understanding of their perceptions of the risks of drug driving in order to know how best to encourage safer driving amongst the target audience.

From my results i found that half the people thought that the risk of getting caught drink driving was equally as likely as getting caught drug however, how a few people thought you would be more likely to get caught drink driving. This could be could be because only 3 out of 24 people actually knew of someone who had been stopped or prosecuted for drug driving whereas drink driving is much more common. When asked what effect illegal drugs would have on someones driving some people believed it would actually make you more aware and alert, give you faster reaction times and give you a better judgement, with one person thinking it would not change your driving. Nearly a quarter of the people believed that police are unable to tell if you are drug driving however just over half are aware of the roadside tests they are able to do. In order to motivate young men to drive more safely people thought that it's important to raise awareness of the risks and consequences and one person suggested showing videos/pictures of accidents on the scene.
